Masekela, and Others, Official World Cup Gig

Fifa recently announced a change to the 2010 World Cup kick-off concert line up. This change comes as a breath of fresh air after a host of artists came down on government for the lack of local acts. Their complaint was noted and action was taken.

Now, soccer fans and music lovers can rejoice together to the souinds of award-winning jazz musician Hugh Masekela trumpet. He  has been added to the World Cup kickoff concert and will be joined by local favorites Freshlyground, The Parlotones and Soweto Gospel Choir, as well as African hip-hop artist K’naan.

Also of note, K’Naan has collaborated with Coca-Cola to bring you a unifying soccer song titled ‘Wavin’ Flag’. Check out the latest version if you haven’t seen it on the telly, yet.

While Shakira, who is also a headlining act, and Freshlyground got their side hustles too on with their official 2010 World Cup song. (That’s a lot of ‘officials, don’t you think?) It’s titled ‘Waka Waka – This Time for Africa’.

Other headlining acts will include Alicia Keys, The Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, and more.

Kelly Rowland, for some reason, also got her 2010 World Cup side hustle on with the song called ‘Everywhere You Go’. This time round, MTN sponsored the production. Featured in the vid, that was shot in Joburg recently, are the likes of Jozi, 2Face, Awadi, Chameleone, Crotale, Kwesta, Rola, Samini, Slikour and Zuluboy. This video has yet to grace our TV screens, though. Watch this space! You can have a listen below, of course!

The concert is set to take place on 10 June at Soweto’s Orlando Stadium.
