Goodbye Mama Mhlongo…

15 June 2010 will go down in history as the date that SA lost another one of its music legends. Busi Mhlongo passed on after a long battle against breast cancer.

The battle, in a sense, has not really been lost. At an acomplished age of 62, Busi has left behind an impressive trail of achievements – including the blessings disguised as songs on several hit albums. In addition to the more obvious influence her music has had, Mama Mhlongo also has scooped up many awards during her career, inculding SAMAs and KORAs.

October 28, 1947–June 15, 2010

October 2007 saw a host of local artists – the likes of Gloria Bosman, Sibongile Khumalo, Thandiswa Mazwai, Judith Sephuma, Simphiwe Dana, Ringo Madlingozi, Siphokazi, Zuluboy to name a few – particiapated in a concert to celebrate Mama Mhlongo’s birthday. The concert was hosted by SABC and was called the Vuka Sizwe Benefit Concert. Part of the proceeds were also used towards her medical bills. The other went towards the establishment of the first South Africa Social Security Trust Fund for Musicians.

Busi Mhlongo was a singer, dancer and composer. Her music was mellifluous with a cocophany of sounds such as jazz, funk, rock, gospel,  opera, reggae and maskandi.

Her last full length musical offering was the album ‘Indiza – Voyages Through New Sounds’ which was released in 2005. Her greatest hits were released on the album ‘African Classic: Busi Mhlongo’  in 2008.

With all that said, the end has come…but your legacy will continue! Aluta continua Mama Mhlongo!
