Digging a Little Deeper with Ryzor and Ziyon

On 27 November, House duo Liqudeep made their mark at the 16th annual Metro FM awards with their 1st career win – ‘Best Group Album’. They out did themselves when they won the ‘Most Downloads’ award later in the evening. We caught up with Ziyon and Ryzor to find out about the wins, their plans going forward, and the upcoming MAMAs.

Celebrity SA: Walking away with not 1, but 2 awards in 1 sitting – describe the moment when they called out “Liquideep” – how did that feel?!

Ryzor : I didn’t want to let my mind think too much about the possibility of winning, as with all awards ceremony one can’t be sure. BUT when our name was called, it took a couple of seconds to register! It was a great feeling (and I was sitting next to DJ Ken – we all wished each other luck) It was a great moment to witness other winners expressions.

Ziyon: It was incredible. I think we were both still a bit shocked. It took us little time to get up and go get the first award. The second award was a total surprise. We didn’t even know that category existed, so yeah, that was a big surprise.

CSA: And how did you guys feel about the competition you were up against in both categories?

R: This is the exact reason why I did not wanna assume anything, the competition was tight! And with the category that we did not win, I was genuinely happy for the winners! It’s just a nice environment to be part of.

Z: I dunno…I personally was just trying to stay calm…wasn’t really thinking about who we were up against. You never know how the things work out. It’s nice to take one home, but to be nominated means a lot as well.

CSA: Now that you have made your presence felt as musicians, where do you hope to take the craft going forward?

R: We plan to expand our music reach, by releasing our material digitally through global distributions like iTunes, etc. And we will be working with a variety of artists from different genres to give our music different influences

Z: We want to give other people a platform to put out what they have creatively. We definitely be working on more music of our own, but we also want to produce for other people as well.

CSA: ‘Fabrics of the Heart’ recently went gold – how does it feel to be relevant in terms of records sales in a time where digital reigns supreme?

R: It’s a blessing. CD sales are not doing great at the moment so we really appreciate the support from our fans and all those who’ve pushed our stuff to reach the stage it has.

Z: God is good. This is our second project that we were involved in to reach that status. It feels good to know that people have gone to buy and support. I still believe that if people really enjoy what you do, they want the actual copy. So yeah, it feels good to be supported the way that we have been.

CSA: Another ‘Song of the Year’ nomination – how are you guys feeling about your nomination ahead of the MAMAs ceremony?

R: Everything is happening so fast event after event, which makes it a bit challenging to absorb at once, but we feel honoured to be part of a huge event such as the MAMAs. Wish us luck!

Z: Nervous, nervous, nervous. I’ll never get used to these ceremonies. What’s dope to us is we get to go to another country because of music. I’m looking forward to the trip and meeting new people. In regards to the awards, eish, yeah ne…we’ll see how it goes.

Get yourself reacquainted with the song up for nomintion…

The MAMAs kick off on this Saturday night, 11 December in Lagos, Nigeria. Tune into MTV Base (DSTV channel 322) on 18 December, at 19h00 CAT to watch the ceremony.

Good luck goes out to Ryzor and Ziyon. Liquideep, together with Jozi, Big Nuz, Teargas, Black Coffee and JR, will be representing SA in this year’s ceremony. Let’s hold thumbs for them all. SA…it’s time to Show Dem! Go vote. Ayeye! 🙂
